overclocking 950 xl
overclocking 950 xl
I was going to write a much more detailed step by step guide but i am too lazy and do not want to encourage you to disassemble your 950xl if you aren't already comfortable doing so
this is not a guide, but a source of information and hopefully the beginning of a discussion on improving 950xl WOA performance from a hardware perspective
out of the box the 950XL overheats and doesn't perform at it's full potential, but every drop of performance, especially cpu, is going to benefit WOA
there are multiple design flaws that cause thermal throttling in the final release product:
the "water cooling" doesn't actually contain any liquid despite initial intentions
there is board forming a barrier between the "water cooling" and the main chip
the thermal paste between the board and the "water cooling" is really bad, which adds to the above barrier
to solve the above issues the chassis above the chip functions a heat spreader but there is no thermal paste between the main chip and the chassis
heres what i did about it:
any ideas how to improve on this?
note that i specifically used kryonaut because it is the best option for this, and even it is not capable of fully dissipating all the heat
anybody not using kryonaut will see less improvement than my own examples

Re: overclocking 950 xl
Could we see the final result?
I mean share photos with the kryonaut how different will it look.
And you should elaborate slightly on that.
Maybe even a video in the future.

Re: overclocking 950 xl
ah sorry, i do not have the proper tools so i cannot disassemble and reassemble my phone multiple times, photos i also did not take
looks same as any paste, it will be fine as long as enough is used, only issues are when using too little
not sure what else i could add to this , mostly want to make the point that performance boost is possible and reproduceable
i will answer any questions though c:
also, got even better top results since the above, maybe needed time to settle in:

Re: overclocking 950 xl
it varied a lot, scores dropped faster whilst charging as there is more heat accumulation
anywhere from 94k following cold boot with no charger
to as low as 79k when phone is warm and charging
the thermal improvements have boosted the max score but the bigger difference is the much less throttling
this better explains the difference in results:
note that i specifically used kryonaut because it is the best option for this, and even it is not capable of fully dissipating all the heat
anybody not using kryonaut will see less improvement than my own examples

Re: overclocking 950 xl
I also tuned up my 950XL by replacing the thermal pad and adding some paste to the processor. (Many thanks for the great manual)
I still had Arctic MX-2 lying around and just thought I'd give it a try. Even though this is not a Kryonaut I have to say that the heat development has improved a lot. Also the processor now seldom switches off the four smaller cores, I think this is also due to the lower heat development.
But I installed WoA as primary OS so I couldn't run the Antutu benchmark to check the performance. Maybe at the next redeploy I will install Win10M again and check some benchmark results.

Re: overclocking 950 xl
Hi guys. If I use thermall grizzly conductonaut ( https://www.thermal-grizzly.com/produkt ... nductonaut ), it will be better than kryonaut? Another, conductonaut don't use with alluminium. There is alluminium details on the photos?

Re: overclocking 950 xl
You can download the version of AnTuTu Benchmark v6.0 UWP Beta1 which works on WOA at this link - http://4pda.ru/forum/index.php?s=&showt ... p=86214098But I installed WoA as primary OS so I couldn't run the Antutu benchmark to check the performance. Maybe at the next redeploy I will install Win10M again and check some benchmark results.
I obtained these results at WOA in Antutu on a standard thermal pad; I did not modify the cooling system on the Lumia 950XL.

- And this is at the recent preliminary release of drivers 1909v2, it is strange that the result has become very worse.

Re: overclocking 950 xl
Your tutorial inspired me to "overclock the Lumia 950 (non-XL)". Used other thermal paste, also requires a few different steps.
Not sure if I should make another thread.

Please expect no nerd magic happening here.
Since people are posting their AnTuTu scores here is a recent one using the thermal-upgraded Lumia 950:

Re: overclocking 950 xl
This result in Antutu was obtained on a standard cooling system, without applying thermal paste, but my device is completely new yet.
