DreamLifter and latest USB Drivers - charging not reliable

Who else is fighting with windows 10 20H2, 950XL and the latest USB-Drivers?
I am having problem with the Dock or respectively with USB-charging.

When connecting it to the display-dock, the device is getting stuck in mounting USB devices. and also the charging is not working. If I freshly start the mobile up with charger connected. then charging works.
Best results I get when loading the new Dreamlifter.exe delayed instead of automatic. but still some time later the USB bus devices are not properly re-detected and charging fails (although it tells it is charging)

Anyway: the Telegram-group seems not to exist anymore-

Seems to be working fine for me. Detects both of my docks and successfully adds anything plugged into the dock as a device on the phone. Now I can't wait for dual screen to come through because it isn't working for me. I'm using the FFU's that can be found here: https://woa-project.github.io/LumiaWOA/FFUs/ because I don't care about Windows 10 Mobile and I'm more comfortable with thor2 than with WOA-Deployer.

I'm ashamed to admit that it did take me FOREVER to realize that theres a known bug with the Windows shell going stupid if you boot with the charger plugged in. :(

Hi,
the bug in the shell means I should boot without anything connected and when done booting I can connect?

Did you start with Win10 2020 from scratch or did you let it update?
At least I know it could potentially work.

Will look this evening for the FFUs, thanks!

Yes, if you boot with anything USB-C connected (verified with USB-C headphones) it will bug the Windows shell. You can verify this by plugging in the power supply and booting from a shutdown state. You will be able to log in, but once you do nothing will operate. You will know this is the problem as soon as you try to open the "Start" menu. The Start icon will highlight however the menu will NOT open. Booting with USB-C plugged in during the first boot (Setup) will result in you being unable to complete the setup process. Connecting AFTER it has gone through the setup process and AFTER it has booted after a startup or reboot will prevent the bug. In other words, in first install... make sure the phone is fully charged so you can make it through a the setup process and a few reboots. If you ever have to reboot or power off, make sure you're unplugged before powering it back on. Its nothing major, but be aware.

I've been running WoA since the initial release. Back when the first FFU got leaked and almost nothing worked. I've migrated through the WoA installer versions and when I found this Github page that was releasing FFU's, I decided to stick with that because it packages the whole setup process into one easy command line install. You don't have to download the Windows 10 ARM WIM file, you don't have to worry about screwing up the process in WoA installer. Flash the FFU with thor2 and be done. YOU WILL LOSE THE ABILITY TO DUAL BOOT WINDOWS 10 MOBILE!!!

I disable Windows updates immediately. Updating will break your install. I also disable Windows Defender and search indexing for performance.

thanks dudemo for the great hints!
For my motivation to reinstall:
Now you can boot with a dock or a USB-Device connected and the system is coming up responsive and with the USB devices properly detects. Right?

I also had to learn now the simple "refresh this PC" is not working. So either
a) I do like I did before, but without USB connections (QI-Charger should be OK)
b) I learn the Thor way.

am I on the right track?

Update 2020-11-24:
the last weeks I reinstalled the whole system with WoA deployer, (I had all already in place from before), but made sure the USB devices where plugged in first time after I reached first time the desktop. But sadly the result was exactly the same as before. Either Power supply not detected or USB-C devices not detected or both. And all of this on top of more power consumption than QI-Charging could deliver. ==> after few hours the lumia was boiling hot and akku empty.
Decided to go back to 2019 drivers. I have no clue how to tell WoA deployer to use older drivers. So I am trying with restoring an image.

I don't know what you mean by "refresh this PC".

I am comfortable using a command prompt in Windows, so for me thor2 is perfect. I prefer the FFU's because I have no need for Windows 10 Mobile at all. If you go to the bottom of this page: https://woa-project.github.io/LumiaWOA/FFUs/ it will tell you exactly how to flash the FFU files. After flashing, make sure nothing is plugged into the USB-C port on the phone at all. Not the dock, not your PC, not even a cable plugged into nothing at the other end. Otherwise you will be unable to finish the Out of Box Experience and will likely bluescreen/reboot. Once you complete the OoBE and see the desktop, reboot again. Once you are back to your desktop on the phone, you can plug anything you want into the USB-C port.

Basically DO NOT BOOT THE PHONE WITH ANYTHING PLUGGED INTO THE USB-C PORT AT ALL! EVER! Once you have reached the desktop, you can plug the dock in. If you reboot, make sure you unplug anything from the USB-C port before you select "reboot"! Once you reboot back to the desktop, you can plug back in. The dock will charge the device and USB devices work. HDMI out does NOT work. I'm writing this right now on the phone using the dock with a USB keyboard, USB mouse, and have a flash drive plugged into it. It works great AFTER YOU REACH THE DESKTOP!

You can learn the thor2 way if you want. You can also use WoA-Deployer. Both achieve the same thing and will use the same driver package. The difference is that with WoA-Deployer you will need to download the Windows 10 ARM ISO and extract the install.wim file and you will have the option to retain Windows 10 Mobile. Using either the FFU or WoA-Deployer will result in the shell bug.

the current USB-C Drivers and settings work for me worse than the drivers a year ago.
No boot without USB plugged in? NEVER? No reliable recognition of charging through USB? This all is no help when wanting to use the Lumia as IOT or Homeautomation gateway.

Tryin something new tonight, hoping not destroying the mobile.
I will try to restore a disk-image made with Macrium, before I updated to current drivers and current everything.

Possibly someone knows how many drives need to be restored.
  • The system disk ==> of course
    The EFI Systempartition?
